Good to know, time to create a test case so I can watch this one in a 
debugger. Have you created a Jira task for this yet? If so you could 
attach the JUnit test case to it for me. I am just checking out geotools 
2.2.x right now ...

We did, finally, do some quality assurance checks on StyleFactory and 
the Style objects themselves (checked them against the specification, 
and made a convention for extensions like Label Shields).  The style 
builder code was a bit of a mess, as it tried to provide helper methods 
for "everything" style, filter and expression.

So your feedback is well timed, I will get back to you soon.
