Great Lakes Observing System Data Curator – Contract Position Background LimnoTech, a water sciences and engineering firm headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, seeks a self-motivated and outgoing individual to work as an independent contractor in cooperation with the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS) in the development, administration, and maintenance of a data and metadata support program. Responsibilities • Support development and implementation of the GLOS data & metadata program including, but not limited to: - Administration, assembly and data entry to the GLOS catalog, as needed. - Ensure compliance with community recognized standards and practices. - Work closely with staff to identify, communicate and solve issues/conflicts of priority/non-standard compliance. - Review and evaluate proposals for new metadata and assist in prioritization and feasibility analysis. - Initiate/propose new processes to continuously improve quality and efficiency. • Assist with definition of metadata governance principles, processes, policies and procedures including: - Participate in project team meetings and meetings with stakeholders, as required. Support discussions around metadata management and governance and document meeting notes. - Provide knowledge and advice on metadata, vocabularies, information models and ontologies as well as best practices for metadata management. - Develop and document workflows, best practices, and SOPs for GLOS data and metadata management. • Provide training and support to a variety of data providers on implementation including: guidance, assistance, or resource documents on development and publishing of metadata and setting up delivery mechanisms for data. • Other tasks as requested. Minimum Requirements • Bachelor’s Degree in informatics, computer science, information science, or other related data-intensive discipline, or clearly demonstrated equivalent experience.. • Understanding and familiarity with metadata standards (ISO19115/ISO19119/ISO19110 following ISO19139, FGDC and Dublin Core), Catalog interfaces (OGC-CSW2.0.2 ISO profile client and server, OAI-PMH client and server, GeoRSS server, GEO OpenSearch server, WebDAV harvesting, GeoNetwork to GeoNetwork harvesting support) and Map Services interfaces (OGC-WMS, WFS, WCS, KML and others). • Ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) to clearly articulate technical expertise and provide support for decision making. • Experience with data management systems and processes. • Organized, attentive to detail and able to meet deadlines. • Ability to assimilate and prioritize requests from multiple individuals and organizations. • Ability to work independently with moderate amount of supervision. • Works effectively across different lines of business. • Proficiency with common computer applications such Windows and Microsoft Office. • Legally able to work in the U.S. (proper identification required). Desired Qualifications • Master’s Degree in informatics, computer science, information science, or other related data-intensive discipline. • Demonstrated experience using GeoNetwork opensource software. • Experience working with aquatic, biological, chemical, meteorological or other environmental science data. • Demonstrated instruction/training skills. • People-oriented and collaborative team player. • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. • Ability and willingness to travel widely Position Details This position is a part-time, independent contractor position for approximately 1,000 hours during the period November 2012 - December 2013 at a competitive hourly rate. This contract position does not include benefits, but may offer the opportunity to transition into regular full-time employment with GLOS or LimnoTech in 2014.
