the tar gz of the multiplatform source code contains
the dos/windows new line in all/some files.

when trying to execute something. sh reports syntax
errors because the non linux new line is recognizes as
a character belonging to the syntax.

    yep, and even when you fix this the hidden directories (ones
    which begin with a '.') aren't in the tar gz too!!

    in other words, the Linux version in the released tar gz is
    completely broken and can't be compiled. At first I thought
    it just didn't work on my system.. then I realised the cvs
    version worked, but the person who packaged the tar gz
    completely screwed it up :P
