So ... I worked the last two days at the GUI ... now it has several nice features ... check them out by yourselves ... I'm too tired to write them down ;) Nec |

Hey, I've written a genetic-backend-ebuild :) ... So you can update it every time anything changes and you do not have to change any import statements in you code, because it is put to a location where a simple "import GeneticPortage" will find it ;) Just put this ebuild into a local overlay and run "ebuild <ebuildname> digest" ... after this step you should simply do emerge genetic-backend :) @buanzo: Could you put in into the download section perhaps? Regards, Necoro |

So ... I updated to genetic (/) | ---- GeneticClient | | | ---- GeneticGUI | | | ---- GeneticSSH | ---- GeneticBackend | ---- GeneticPortage | ---- GeneticShell @buanzo: Could you please commit your shell :) |

So, I currently thought of a "reorganisation" of the somewhat strange and troublesome sub-module structure: My suggestion would be: Genetic (/) | ---- Genetic (client) | | | ---- GeneticGUI | | | ---- GeneticSSH | ---- GeneticBackend | ---- GeneticPortage | ---- GeneticShell This also produces a consistent name scheme :) ... (which takes into account, that python-modules must not have dashes in there name ;)) IdS, Nec |

Hi As I already mentioned, I had problems with commiting stuff to sf.net-svn. After looking around a bit on SF.net-Sites, I found the remark: "A recent kernel exploit was released that allowed a non admin user to escalate privileges on the host pr-shell1. We urge all users who frequent this host to change their password immediately and check their project group space for any tampering. As a precaution, we have blocked access to all project resources by password until the user resets their password. After the password has been reset, project resources should be accessible within 5 minutes." So ... after changing my password, everything worked again as it should ... just wanted to inform you :) IdS Nec |

Furthermore, I added "find_best_package" which returns the best package you can install on you system. I can't upload it to svn at the moment ... (sf.net does not let me auth in svn -.-) |

I'm currently working on package dependency calculation now. As there is nothing implemented in gentoolkit for it, it's quite a hard job ... So it might take a few days :) |

So .. I do now have an own sf.net-page: sf.net/projects/geneticone ... There in the svn you can find the actual sourcecode. :) |

Some more updates today: 1.) I rewrote "list-categories" to use gentoolkit.settings.categories 2.) I have overridden the gentoolkit.Package.is_masked()-method, because it did not work properly. 3.) I added a Package.get_cp() method, which just returns the string <category>/<name> IdS Nec |

I think, the word "fork" is just not the right one ;) ... it is more of "another project which just happens to use genetic as a library" ;) |

Funny. On 7/10/06, Necoro d.M. <ge...@pr...> wrote: > I simply take my ViM ... open a python file and code some pygtk-code :). Xrc works, too. Well, I'm glad you talked about a fork of the gui, then. Coding the gui with straight pygtk sounds cool, anyway. We will use xrc, and the genetic-shell will make use of the cookies module. bye. |

Hi! I added the "list_categories" function to the cookies. This function takes an optional name and returns a list of all categories matching .*name.* or - if name is not given - all categories. IdS Nec |

necoro, as long as you write an xrc-based GUI, your work will continue to be useful for the project. I'm working on a python module and a genetic-shell for all client-server communication and data transference. if you want to create a gui and using genetic-cookies but not help in any way (i.e xrc-gui), then go ahead, too :P too bad you are already thinking in a fork when we had settled form the start up that genetic should was going to be a multiplatform client-server based (over ssh, that means localhost too) portage frontend. thanks anyway. And say what ^^ ... I just realized that some nice portage-functions are missing in the moment in genetic-cookies. The find_all_packages() is way to slow at the moment. And there is no function to get all categories a.s.o. I think I'll spend some time on implementing them :) |

Hey ^^ we are in our planning phase - but nevertheless, I think I'll do a project fork called "Genetic/One". It'll be only for the local maintainance of the portage tree (i.e. a normal portage-GUI), but I'll use the genetic-cookies as the portage-interface :) Why did I do this: I always wanted a nice portage GUI (and there is none atm) and I thought Genetic might be a good one. But in the moment we are waiting for features I do not see as essential (e.g. the XRC-blah). Additionally I want to gain some pyGtk-experiences ;) So far, Ren=E9 |

Sorry that's something massimo and I probably didn't post into this list: we will not be supporting a console-based genetic client for windows, only a GUI one. Hi there, as buanzo has already mentioned, there are some problems with windows and pexpect. As I was googling around today to find sth about ncurses and XRC I read, that there is no ncurses under windows (i.e. the curses-module won't work there). Thereby: Do we really want to make it run under Windows? IdS, Nec |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 OK, We desperately need a GUI Designer. Jon Hood had some personal/work issues and he believes he may not have time to contribute to the project. So, we need to find someone who can write down the XRCs for this project. Any ideas to gather people?
