APC-Cdc20 complex inhibitor activity
is part of
negative regulation of mitotic metaphase/anaphase transition

but in this paper
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v434/n7032/full/nature03406.html
PMID:15791259

It looks like mes1 negatively regulates the transition in meiosis and no evidence is given for its involvement in mitosis?

Should this parent term be moved to
negative regulation of metaphase/anaphase transition of cell cycle
?

Cheers

    Hi Antonia,

I can't see a problem here. This is a function term, and so the various activities of specific gene products (mes1) or complexes are not relevant to its definition.

The definition is clear, if a little tighter than the name suggests:

Def: "Prevents the activation of the APC-Cdc20 complex activity to negatively regulate the mitotic metaphase anaphase transition."

i.e.- It only applies to cases of inhibition of APC-Cdc20 complex activity where that resutls in negative regulation of the mitotic metaphase anaphase transition.

In case I'm missing something, I'm re-assigning to Tanya as she created this term last week in response to a request from Val and so presumably can give more relevant background.

    (see also https://sourceforge.net/p/geneontology/ontology-requests/11573/)

    Cheers,
    David

    Hi Antonia,

I agree with what David said, "This is a function term, and so the various activities of specific gene products (mes1) or complexes are not relevant to its definition."

For more info on this term, please consult Val and/or follow the discussion on this term.

    Thanks,

    Tanya

    Hi,

I agree with Antonia. This is slightly related to the discussion yesterday.

    Even though
    APC-Cdc20 complex inhibitor activity
is a function term, it is part_of
negative regulation of mitotic metaphase/anaphase transition

and so mes1 will become annotated to
negative regulation of mitotic metaphase/anaphase transition (via F-P links)

    which will be incorrect

Ah I don't think Antonia's initial comment is clear.

mes1 inhibits the meiotic APC-cdc20 complex, but there is no evidence for its involvement in mitosis.
In fact it is a meiosis specific protein.

So, there is also a meiotic APC-cdc20 (everything I have curated so far refers to the mitotic APC-Cdc20 complex.)

Pruning these branches back and using extensions to link F-P as suggested here
    https://sourceforge.net/p/geneontology/ontology-requests/11589/
    might help?

Yes, I meant that the FP link should move up to the parent BP "GO:1902100 negative regulation of metaphase/anaphase transition of cell cycle"

i.e. omitting the bit about mitosis so that mes1 doesn't inherit that BP

We probably do need to do these differently assuming that we don't want to have ubiquitin ligase inhibitor activities for every specific instance of ubiquitin ligase.

    We can capture with
"ubiqitin ligase inhibitor activity" has_direct_input (gene product, or complex) and then make the F-P connection with a part_of extension.

I prefer to make F-P links in this way.

    related to :

    https://sourceforge.net/p/geneontology/ontology-requests/11589/

If we obsolete the terms as described there, the solution reverts to Val's last proposal, capture with 'ubiquitin ligase inhibitor activity' and extensions.
