    It's unfortunate that the OP put several requests under one heading, but I'd like to detail the "display executable files" one. The best way I can think of doing this is have an additional "Basic Color" for executables and a checkbox for whether to override the extension.

    It sounds a bit like feature creep, but another way would be to define overlay patterns for attributes. So a "grid" could mean executable, "cross-hatch" == read-only, and "polka-dots" == suid or something. Combined with colors, these could even be more expressive.
