I can see this is the error that is happening to all of us running Debian:

Can someone (geoff?) give precise, detailed and easy to follow debian installation instructions. For example "As a workaround, if you understand C macros you can edit the file and expand the macro by hand - just copy the gdam_spatial_arg_set_ and _get_ stubs, remove all the forward slashes at the ends of the lines, and substitute for arg_name and prefix. Should be pretty straightforward. " is not quite detailed, I can not uderstand this without single example.

This looks as a great peice of software, it would be the shame if ic can not be compiled on the best Linux distro :)
