I got the app working - now I just have to get ~9 gigs of mp3's onto my linux box from an NTFS partition..
Anyway - been downloading a bunch of songs from mp3.com to test various effects etc - seems that VBR is broken?
I get things like :
Junk at the beginning 49xxxx
Skipped Riff Header
etcetc.
Can I grab a new version of mpeg123 or does it have to be customized? Or is there a current version of Mpeg123? See all these things i don't know.
Failing that; anyone know of a good app I can use to re-compress mp3 files into a useable bitrate/format? I hate to think how many of my _must_haves_ are already in VBR format.

I get some of the same 'junk at the beginning' and 'skipped riff header'
warnings. Although the warnings don't prevent me from using the mp3
files successfully, it'd be nice if our mp3 decoder could handle the
full range of valid mp3 files. On occasion i get a warning
'skipped xx bytes of input' in the middle of a track, and the song
skips some input. These errors tend to mess up the time or produce
ugly sounds. However, i haven't tested to see whether the mp3 files
in question were genuinely corrupted, so i'm hesitant to blame mpg123.
If you check out our web page,
www.gdam.org
and look in the development section, there is a new online
todo list. One entry lists potential alternate mp3 decoders, and
their strengths and weaknesses. We'd like input on this topic.
