I think that brings up a good point; that there is an algorithmic difference between light map packing, and isochart generation / mesh parametrization. The provided link is a pretty good algorithm for lightmap packing, but I wouldn't say that is the hard part of the problem. Specifically the parameterization tends to be the most difficult (or atleast algorithmicly tricky) part of generating the UVs automatically. (Although to be honest, ABF++ and LSCM are pretty nifty algorithms in their own right) FWIW I've talked to a few others, (off-list) who say they live & die by having artists generate these global UVs for environments rather than automatically generating them; is this pretty common for everyone? I can't imagine introducing this data interdependency into our artist pipeline at this point, considering all the bells & whistles we get from being able to run post-analysis on the isochart generation (Sebastian mentions a few good ones). ~Main On Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 5:46 PM, Jeff Gooloolie <jef...@ho...>wrote: > The best packing algo is here with source code!!!!! > http://www.blackpawn.com/texts/lightmaps/default.html > > dave > > > ------------------------------ > Date: Thu, 22 Jan 2009 23:53:37 -0600 > From: mai...@gm... > To: gda...@li... > Subject: [Algorithms] Texture Atlas Generation survey > > > Just as a quick check, I was wondering what most of you use for algorithms > to generate unique UV's for an environment (ie, for generating UVs for > lightmaps, etc)? > > Does everyone use UVATLAS (D3D?) or a more homebrew solution?
