Forgive me if I'm being un-academic or not interested in tinkering,
but what's wrong with the third approach

0) Have your authoring tool of choice (Max/Maya) calculate the
lighting in whatever slow, precise, artist-friendly way they like,
then have it baked into a texture from within said authoring tool?
