I implemented rain by creating a plane in the sky which drops billboards randomly which follow a direction modified by a random angle. Each customizable property can be modified for a different effect. Is there some guide to creating other effects like smoke? Some implementations seem to rotate and get bigger (and look a bit fake), but others seem so good it's hard to see how they are done. I read about creating fractal/perlin noise and modifying the phase over time and modulating with a circle fade and using emitters. Although that sounds nice that was in 3dsmax and I'm not sure about the cost of that in real-time.
