[Algorithms] Generating mip maps for normal maps

I remember a few weeks ago a couple people mentioned some clever algorithms for generating mip-maps for normal maps. Right now I do a standard box filter on the original texture (these are normal maps as used in dot3 bump mapping), and it doesn't look very good at all.
