Instead of numerical recipes, I would suggest either of both of: Numerical Algorithms in C by Engeln, Mullges, Uhlig Numerical Methods by Faires and Burden. Both cover many types of integrators that are decribed well and have sample code. Also, the example code on my website http://www.darwin3d.com/gdm1999.htm#gdm0899 has a mass and spring system that implements Euler, Midpoint, RK4, and a Crenshaw integrator that is second order predictor-corrector. In my opinion, the Crenshaw integrator is the best option for particle systems. It gives you stability beyond midpoint at a cost about equal to Euler.
