I had to sort my mates xp laptop.tecra /toshiba 0.5g ram ,old intel.
it was an ex university net pb but he got locked out for wrong pass word. It was because the keyboard was faulty. I connected a usb kb and ok, except locked out-see system manager.
To be brief I installed linux mint 17.5 and it's like windows for him.
I was impressed with it but if I wanted to use gcb would it be complicated? installling gcb on rpi gave lots of errror messages.
For a minimal user mint is fast...I installled the chromium browser. it's the terminal stuff that puts me off.
It puts life into an old pc if all you want is the same apps as win but anything else gets complicated.

i dont see myself moving over to win10 any year soon.tried it and hated it.
the best option would be for the existing users on win7 to get a dual-tested version until the user balance finally swings prodominantly towards a newer OS and presumably win7 machines die off?

What is actually wromg with win 10? I can't see ms releaseing updates that stops it working.
I got the free win 32 win 10 when they were plugging it for a free upgrade from win 7.
On a laptop I had it dual boot but as I said when win 10 updated it said win 7 was a ligit version......ok it wasn't,I used a crack to activate it.
Thing is I updated a pc from same win 7 to win 10 and no problems.
As it was a 64bit pc I downloaded the 64bit win 10 from ms and upgraded it.
The 64bit win10 seems slower than the 32bit version.
I got it to dual boot linux mint mate 19.2 64bit version.....not a barrel of laughs linux.
It can't be that bad, I must be missing the point or some thing.
Kodi under mint is moaning where as on two friends machines kodi works.
Shall I try intstalling gcb on mint...just for the experience?...well I am and bet it doesn't run smooth.

Well I downloaded gcb linux and extracted but no ide just chip data, demos, include etc.
Not a clue what to do next and would it program a uno or work with pickit 2/3?

so how to get gcb to work in linux mint 19.2
I must admit windows wins over linux as for ease of use.
Now to get the linux partition back to win recognisable nd dump grub dual boot..........
or play with linux mint....it's like a rpi

Interesting and valid question and worthy of a new thread.
May I suggest you start a topic with that question rather than leave it here in an all but exhausted thread? We have several Linux Users and as much as I dislike MPLabX there is a linux version that includes the IPE so a discussion of integrating GCBASIC with MPLAB on LINUX Mint could be enlightening to many.
We may even be saved by a suggestion of an alternative IDE and some LINUX PICKit Drivers.
Cheers
Chris
