It's recovery usb created from win 10. I thought it was mbr problem but when I swapped a clone drive for the C: drive ie unplugged c: and plugged in sdd then changed boot to use usb stick win 10 repair then sort problems that stop windows from starting it started window then a black screen for too long. ie didn't work.
It's not a usb problem as I've cloned hard drives on same machine ie c: to e: Same problems.
This is another reason people liked win 7!
This i5 pc is fast enough for me with the fitted 1TB hdd so I'm not breaking it. 8G ram and a used radeon 2Gig graphics card and it's fastest pc I've owned. Sad really but not a gamer so improvements are gcb works faster and 3d printer stuff. Latest software works cos it supports open gl latest.
This all should be in "open discussion" if at all relevent.

You will find aomei software free versions don't work. easus doesn't.paragon is not free.
mini partition tool failed.macrium reflect seems to work but doesn't.
Aomei backup tool is the worst. It did work but now is a teaser...not nice.
Thing is the companies gave the free versions all you needed to clone/backup and little reason to buy the software after.
I tried using aomei partition standard to move os to ssd or hdd but it failed half way saying use chkdsk. I did but cloning takes an hourso more tomorrow.
I stuck the 240G ssd in an old lap and reinstalled win 7...and the service pack.Runs like a laptop should now. Old but still ok for most stuff. So ssd drives do speed things up.
I'm ordering another. Not sure how big.

Well seems ok now. I replugged the ssd to another sata plug and ran aomei patition standard free under pre os, not pe and it works.
I swapped the sata lead to hdd to ssd so it became C: and the other sata lead 1TB ex win 10 and it boots to ssd and works ok.
See photo. C: is now ssd and E: is old hdd....with win still on it as a spare maybe.
Clever Trevor...sorry.
The clone has worked and aomei partition assistant free version is a must have.
Pity it's hidden in extra tools --clone disk.
The PE reminded of bart PE...a sort of win repair cd.
The PE option didn't work for ssd but the pre-os option did.
My pc is new to me but seems even faster with a ssd os.
You may think I don't have much space left but cant't think of much more to install.
Running anything on other hdd would be slower. All new and interesting. :)

says it only clones the necessary bits cos I was confused to cloning 1TB drive to 200G drive but it sorts it for you..nice. Other software you have to do it manually.
Useful software. My "new" pc is running very smooth and instant...no waiting.
OK it's an i5 with 8G ram and pcie card "old" but is amazing for me and running off ssd is faster.
£70 for the pc and £23 for the ssd...and £12 for used 3d card from ebay.

I used the above free software to clone my sister's Win10 laptop's HDD to an SSD a few weeks ago. No dramas. It just worked.
Very good to know.
How did the cloning process work with the digitial license? Any idea ?
No idea, but no tech support pleas for assistance either, so I assume all good.
What does Windows report? Licensed ? or some other message.

there's check all software and clone disk. It worked with a usb to sata hdd and swapped with C: and booted ok.
Didn't work with sdd although I've tried this ssd in laptop and is ok.

Glad you got there in the end Stan. Happy New PC Year :)
4.8 seconds to compile pong. on new pc. 8 seconds on old pc. 8 seconds was ok!
