There's no real need to physically modify the cube to read standard discs. The
laser unit firmware can be temporarily patched by software (like gc-linux does)
to make it interoperable with standard dvd+/-r media.

Although, having a replacement case to house 12cm discs is practical, and in the
long term cheaper.
