The SD-Card Adapter Alone does not work. The original GC Bios can only Boot GC-Discs. The Easiest Way IMHO would be Datel's MAX Drive Pro or an Action Replay Disc with the SD Loader. After this step you could boot Linux over the Network and administer it over SSH.
