In CS3? Here's what I do:

1) Open "something.png" which is a 32-bit image.
2) Select All.
3) Look in Filters menu, and notice that everything is blanked out 
except the "convert for smart filters" menu option.

Really, I'm not feeling good about CS3 at this time.
