[GD-General] free development tools

Hi,
I've been doing all my win32 coding on a 'student' version of visual studio.
However, I want now to distribute one of my programs and I'm looking for a
free (or at least cheap) windows compiler. I've been trying cygwin's gcc,
but compiled programs require cygwin.dll, and building dynamic link
libraries seems to be really complex. Appart from that linking with DirectX
seems also to be a problem. I can probably work all those things out, but
before that, I would like to know which alternatives are out there (mingw,
lcc, etc) and which path would you recommend.
