[GD-General] Pong ball mechanics

I've never played a game of pong so I don't know, but I am writing up a
clone so I need to know. How does the ball travel in anything but a
straight line? My reasoning is this: the bat is flat and perpendicular
to the field of play so anything striking it perpendicularly should
reflect perpendicularly ad infinitum. This would be extremely boring and
I am obviously wrong since the ball can carom at odd angles. What are
the game mechanics to make the ball reflect at interesting angles?
