That would be nice, but most people I know stick to one OS (per machine, at
least), so I'd consider it less important for it to work across OSs. And I
like to turn machines off :)

Laptops only offer this support in the guise of extended runtimes
for a given OS boot.  I'd though you were considering context
extension across multiple boots, where each reboot may be to a
different (version of) an OS.  For this latter case (X)Emacs,
Galeon, and a very few others offer some support. -- and it would be
great to see such being more common.
