Hi All, Does anyone know what's going on with Get It Now for the Samsung a670? They barely launch any new apps for that phone, yet I know they have apps ready to go. Its such a popular phone so it's a shame that new apps aren't being launched for it in significant numbers (well I guess not for those who already are on the a670 deck). Thanks, -Aaron |

Hi there, Dunno what going with verizon lately.. No more 9500 submissions, now 15 devices support required for a launch, aso.. But well, xmas is soon, so maybe it's just a big slacking period.. /David aka kUfa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Aaron Isaksen" <ais...@ap...> To: <gam...@li...> Sent: Wednesday, December 15, 2004 5:25 PM Subject: [Gamedevlists-brew] what's going on with VZW Get It Now for Samsung a670? > Hi All, > > Does anyone know what's going on with Get It Now for the Samsung a670? > They > barely launch any new apps for that phone, yet I know they have apps ready > to go. Hey kUfa... I've enjoyed your posts over on the forums. :) You wrote: > now 15 devices support required for a launch I'm not the 'business' end of things where I'm at, but I'm definitely curious... Does this mean what I think it means? (i.e., VZW requires that an app/game support 15 devices otherwise they won't release it) Or am I totally hallucinating something when I read that line? :) -bill! |

Sprint requires 9 devices last I checked, other carriers have similar requirements. Tom |

Verizon over the past months has developed some really nasty habits and this is one of them. They will accept applications only - among many other criteria - if you can provide it on at least 15 handsets for launch. They are no longer willing to stagger releases. Guido |

That's understandable, I guess. It still sucks, though, since in some cases, certain apps simply /cannot/ run on certain phones, due to OS/OEM bugs. -bill! |

I don't really understand the problem tbh. Surely you want your game running on as many handsets as possible ? I wasn't aware of this hard-coded limit, as I'm a contractor (for now) and don't deal directly with Verizon or any other carrier per se. However, my answer to the question "How many phones should we support ?" is "Well, how many are there ?" <Caveat> I think I can make an exception to those 96x54/65 things though, as I class them as glorified watches as opposed to gaming platforms! :-D </Caveat> PS. Hi guys - I'm new to the list. Anyone here from Infinite or Vindigo ? Well, let me put it to you this way. We currently have 43 certified versions of "FlipIt!" for the North American market alone. That's how many handsets there are... The reason they have instated this policy is manifold. One of the main reasons I've been told is to lower the overhead required to test them all internally. Verizon hates to spend money on data apps - they are supposed to make money for them not the other way round - and they try every way they can to minimize costs in that department, as also indicated by the fact that they have virtually no people dealing with all that stuff to begin with. So instead of ramping up testing for the same title 10 times, they want to get it all done in one swoop. Guido |

Sounds fair to me tbh. I couldn't imagine doing this one at a time anyways. Well, there is always a time and cost factor involved. For the past week's I've been trying to get the number of handset versions together for the launch of my new game, but it just takes forever getting them all through NSTL and all, especially if you have some versions failing, like it just happened to me. In the meanwhile you have versions sitting around that could make money, yet have to wait until the batch is fully tested. By the time you have 15 versions certified you have footed quite a bill and it will take months until you see the first dime out of those apps. So, while I see it making sense from VZW's standpoint, of course, it puts quite a bit of additional burden on my end that I did not have before. Though I can certainly live with that. Guido |

So why, after they've put so much into testing the Samsung a670 phones, would they not launch on it? Seems like a lot of money waiting to be made... Re this 15 handset policy, what about porting your previously launched apps to newer phones? Are they more lenient on this? -Aaron > money on data apps - they are supposed to make money for them > not the other way round - and they try every way they can to > minimize costs in that department, as also indicated by the > fact that they have virtually no people dealing with all that > stuff to begin with. I do not pretend to understand Verizon at all... quite the opposite, actually. :-) > Re this 15 handset policy, what about porting your previously launched > apps > to newer phones? Are they more lenient on this? I do believe so, but again, they like to see you come over with a bunch of handsets at once rather than starting to support them one by one, is my feeling. Currently I try to send them in 4 handsets at a time, usually, but if need be, I simply submit a single one as well. So far it has worked. Guido |

I think VZW might be trying to strong-arm/punish Samsung for something. For what, I don't know. -----Original Message----- From: gam...@li... I was at the Verizon store two months ago (yes, a geological era) helping my housemate shop for a phone. They were pushing the A670 hard, and it's what she ended up buying (even though I tried to convince her that she'd be better of with a distinct digital camera). She got it for something like $89 after the rebate. It was one of maybe four Get It Now devices that they had dedicated displays for, and they said you should buy it if "you like to take pictures". The thing that really shocked me was they said you should buy the Nokia 3589i if "you like playing games". -JHW Quoting Aaron Isaksen <ais...@ap...>: > Hi All, > > Does anyone know what's going on with Get It Now for the Samsung a670?
