We have some public conference rooms that we like to
monitor, but are usually low traffic. It would be nice
to get some notification when their is new content in
the window. I assume it was a deliberate decision not
to use sounds for conferences because of the typical
high traffic levels, but it some cases it might be
nice. Perhaps it could be enable on a per-room basis,
or only play sounds when there has been no traffic for
a certain period.

I'd much rather just pop up a transient message of some kind
like Exodus does, but we can't do this in GNOME1...

Given that it's not possible to pop up a transient message,
how hard would it be to add some sound events. I suppose it
should be possible for the user to disable sounds completely
for group chats (to stay consistent with current behavior)
and it would be nice specify how long the group chat remains
idle before new traffic would generate a sound.
