Entry timeout sets the maximum time for which a lookup of a directory
entry is cached.

Negative timeout is the same, but for non-existent entries.  So for
example if you do 

  $ ls y
  ls: y: No such file or directory

And repeat it within the negative timeout, the kernel won't perform a
new lookup.

The attribute timeout sets the maximum time for which cached file
attributes are valid.
