Apologies for the long silence!

We meanwhile tested the patch and it works great!  It is exactly what we 
were looking for for a long time.  Besides allowing us to enable symlink 
caching, the patch also solves for us the problem of paths changing file 
type (e.g., directory to symlink).

The only modification we applied is to add FUSE_CAP_DENTRY_EXPIRE_ONLY 
to libfuse in the spirit of the other CAP flags.

We would very much love to see these changes upstreamed.  What can we do 
to help?
