You are not the first one bitten by this. Having "." in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH will slow down programs on sshfs. Usually that happens because some stupid scripts do this: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/some/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH} which results in LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/some/lib: And that empty path after the colon is interpreted as "."
