How to get ESXDOS running in Fuse

Prerequisites

Step-by-step

  1. Unzip the ESXDOS distribution somewhere convenient
  2. Create a new HDF file: "hdfmonkey create esxdos.hdf 128M ESXDOS"
  3. Add the ESXDOS "SYS" and "BIN" directories into the HDF image: "hdfmonkey put esxdos.hdf <ESXDOS location>/SYS /; hdfmonkey put esxdos.hdf <ESXDOS location>/BIN /"
  4. Create and add an empty "TMP" directory to the HDF image: "mkdir TMP; hdfmonkey put esxdos.hdf TMP /"
  5. Add any other files (.tap etc) that you want available into the HDF image.
  6. Start Fuse as "fuse --divide --divide-masterfile esxdos.hdf <ESXDOS location>/ESXIDE.TAP"
  7. When the "ADJUST FLASH FUSE JP2/E, HIT KEY" prompt appears, just hit any key.
  8. Mark "DivIDE write protect" at "Options->Peripherals->Disk".
  9. Hard reset the Spectrum; you should see information on the HDF file, ESXDOS.SYS and NMI.SYS.
  10. Select the tape file you want to use, either via ".tapein filename.tap" from BASIC or via the NMI menu.
  11. "LOAD """ and you're away.
