Ian - thanks for the encouragement - I kept going and found a good page that said "run the Additional Drivers program" which had a recommendation selected and all I had to do was press the "Activate" button, enter su password, wait 5 minutes while it downloaded and installed, then it said to reboot and now I can get freewrl 1.wrl showing a cone.
