As a supplement to Gentoo, there is also "linux from scratch" located here= http://www=2Elinuxfromscratch=2Eorg This will also give a person with programming experience in other environments a chance to hit the ground running by compiling (from source code) each and every tool a typical Linux user uses=2E It tremendously hel= ped me learn what Linux was all about and how stuff worked on my machine=2E It= also has step by step instructions and even explains why stuff is compiled= the way it is=2E I have recommended Linux from scratch to several converte= d windows users with great success=2E Bottom line is, don't give up just cau= se Freevo isn't user friendly=2E I think you'll find Linux just what you're looking for if you are patient=2E As far as a Linux API for C=2E=2E=2E=2Et= ake your pick=2E=2E=2Emost GNU/Linux is completely open source, plus there are fram= eworks out there like Qt=2E=2E=2E=2Ewww=2Etrolltech=2Ecom (not my choice)=2E=2E=2E= and GTK (gimp tool kit), amoung others=2E I would look at GCC (our beloved compiler) and see = if something catches your eye=2E With Linux, you aren't bound to a strict API= like windows because things are open source=2E Depends on your application= , I guess=2E=20 remember www=2Efreshmeat=2Enet is your friend!
