The forum has been getting a lot of spam. It seems that phpbb3 has had its default mode compromised. I don't have the time or experience to set up proper spam prevention or continue deleting it. There is an issue with phpbb3 that prevents me from even disabling new user registration. I'm not sure what to do. If people wouldn't think it too destructive, perhaps we can create a Nabble forum, they have a much better handle on it and we can embed it as well. You can't just install a(nother) captcha plugin? I haven't even looked if you have one on there yet. Am happy to give it a go tonight if you want. Charles, I did email you personally after the previous conversation requesting more information on passwords/setup etc... but got no response. I see the spam is just getting worse and worse... would love to do something about it as soon as possible. Steven. Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2009 02:19:26 +0000 From: cha...@gm... To: fre...@li... Hi Steve, I didn't get that email. Sorry for responding late... anyhow, information... You are now listed as a founder on the forum. That gives you full admin access there. However, I doubt that'll be enough. You'll need to install files. On the project you now have admin access to everything. The forum is under htdocs/files and you should have access there. If not, let me know. - C 2009/2/21 Steven Hoefel <ste...@ho...>: > Charles, > > I did email you personally after the previous conversation requesting more > information on passwords/setup etc... but got no response. > I see the spam is just getting worse and worse... would love to do something > about it as soon as possible. > > Steven. |

Charles, You need to change the ownership on the forum folder, i currently cannot get in there to since you personally own it. as for spam protection, the best i can offer (and was indenting on implementing) is asking real questions, i.e. "From what game is FreeTrain based?" etc... can anyone suggest one or more to put on there, I don't want to make it too hard for people who don't know the game! I keep trying and failing to do this. The interface to managing this is so poor. The users and groups are given as numbers but it's hard to know what numbers we should be using. - C 2009/2/24 Steven Hoefel <ste...@ho...>: > Charles, > > You need to change the ownership on the forum folder, i currently cannot get > in there to since you personally own it. > > as for spam protection, the best i can offer (and was indenting on > implementing) is asking real questions, i.e. "From what game is FreeTrain > based?" etc... > can anyone suggest one or more to put on there, I don't want to make it too > hard for people who don't know the game! > > Steven. |

Steven, do you know what group id the freetrain group is? - C 2009/2/27 Charles Goodwin <cha...@gm...>: > I keep trying and failing to do this. The interface to managing this > is so poor. The users and groups are given as numbers but it's hard > to know what numbers we should be using. > > - C |

Well the project group id seems to be the same as the project id (makes sense). Also the shell service seems to be somewhat restored. ssh -t foo,fre...@sh... create I did a chgrp -R on the forum directory. Let me know how it goes. - C |

I have disabled new user registration. If you look at the member list and order by post date, there's 56 pages of spam members before reaching real members. The database needs purging. - C |

In the height of procrastination on things more important, I took to purging the spam from the database. All users registered after 16th Feb got nuked. A few (and I mean at a maximum of 5) real users will have been hit by that, but I was not sorting through 1200 spam users to weed out a couple of real ones who had maybe made 1 or 2 posts between them. I also deleted all spam topics (only had to skim through 100 so I did that manually). For reference, phpbb stores dates as unix timestamps, so this was required: http://simonwillison.net/2003/Jul/11/storingDatesInMySQL/ All is now well. (Except with my work...) - C |
