a friend send me a new design he has drawn with free ship. i wanted to open it, but it is a .free file. my freeship just want to have .fbm files. where is the mistake?

No mistake. .free was the old file format. Old FREE!ship version, I think up to version 2.3 or so, can open it. Version 2.3 can then save in the new .fbm format.
You can download all the old versions from Sourceforge. And since there is no installation necessary, I suggest that you keep a Version 2.3 in case you need to convert old files.
