There are so many good features in 1.2, but I've had to switch back to 1.1.
The vertical space between nodes in 1.2 is noticeably smaller, making the map
look 'squished' and dense, and harder to read.
In the 1.2 preferences there's a setting for vertical space when in outline
view. Can one be added for map view, please? Alternatively, can the default
v-space setting be reverted?

In the mean time (also in 1.2) you can set the v-space of all nodes at once.
Keep Ctrl pressed, select a nodes handle (oval) and move the cursor up/down
to change the vertical space for ALL nodes. I have added this description to http://www.kioo.nl/freeplane/tutorial_en 13.Finetuning freeplane.

I learn something new about FP everyday! I didn't know this capability existed
--given that this feature affects not only the spacing of the existing nodes
but NEW ones as well, this seems to address the concerns mentioned by the
original poster? In other words, there IS a way to adjust spacing that applies
to the entire map and is permanent... If I'm understanding correctly, there
isn't a bug, right?

It is described in the documentation of FP 1.1.3. One way or another I lost
this description, but I will add it to the Documentation and I have added it
tot the Quick reference, see chapter 10. Finetuning in http://www.kioo.nl/f

Dimitri,
wouldn't it be a good idea to make the above functionality visible in menu
Format (last entry) ?

Not quite. Ctrl+Drag changes the v-space for the node you drag and all its
siblings. It works if you add new siblings. But it doesn't work for nodes
elsewhere on the map, or new child nodes.

Hello, I'm trying to follow the instructions but I don't understand them:
"select a nodes handle (oval) and move the cursor up/down"
1- Select a nodes handle (oval) sounds like
- select all nodes (CTRL+a) or
- select desired nodes (hold CTRL key and click desired nodes)
2- What is the cursor and how do I move it up and down? I tried pressing the
up and down keys without any results. The scroll wheel on my mouse only zooms
in/out.
I am using Freeplane 1.1.3 on Windows 7 and Java 1.6.0_31

Select a nodes handle means: hover at the parent side of a (one) node until
the oval appears. Keep ctrll pressed and click this oval (keep pressed), then
move the cursor up/down. I am not sure if this works in 1.1.3. It does work in
Freeplane 1.2 beta which can be downloaded on freeplane.org.

I filed a bug report Mantis 0001539. In earlier version it worked on all
selected nodes as described above.
