I don't know if you are aware of it, but many projects of the "zettlekasten" or "roam" type are being developed at the moment. The strength of this approach is that it allows you to connect ideas and notes on the fly... and then see connections appear that were not imagined at first.

The question I ask myself is if we could do this with Freeplane?
