Considering all Freeplane types of icons are inserted on the node left side (overall icons from toolbar, notes, attributes, links), depending of the amount of elements used the left side becomes overloaded.
Then this suggestion is to position the "links" (internals and externals) on the node right side, as showed in this snapshot: http://i.imgur.com/YzfZYYh.png
Links on the right will match the default side of Freeplane connectors, what sounds consistent. Also, the position of links on the right is a bit intuitive considering many other applications.

If this flies, I hope it is an an option. I don't think I'd like my text bracketed between icons. I'd like to opt out of this arrangement, if implemented.
