One of the nicest recent features of Mindmanager Sofware is called "subtopic counter", i.e. when topics are collapsed, the expand icon (previously a "+" symbol) converts to a number icon, indicating the number of unseen subtopics in the collapsed branch. I've uploaded an image with an example. I'd like to see this feature on Freeplane. So that the numbers of all folded descendents of a given node is shown inside its folding symbol. That would be very useful because we would have an idea about the extension of that part of the map that is folded and we are unsure about how large it is. I'm aware that we can change the size of the folding symbol, and if it is too small the number can't fit inside it. Maybe we should stipulate a minimum size in order to show that number.

I would find this quite helpful. It would be helpful on a large map, to be a quick reminder of how much work I have put into one part of my project or another, at a glance, without having to click into and expand the node.

You could do this using a script, just to count then descendants then to put the number in the details or in an attribute of the node (or append it to the core text).
The script would be activated using a hotkey as usually. So you would see the node count only when you activate the script. Also the node count could be calculated for each subnodes.
Best regards,
Alexandre

I would have no problem with this -- if it were optional. I wouldn't want it imposed with no option to go back to the normal behavior.
I'd suggest making this suggestion in the feature request tickets to see how many users give it a plus.
+1 Handy functionality, "if it were optional" too.
I do not see any need and any use case
