I would like to contribute the the project by creating pull requests but unfortunately, the versioning system does not support it or I do not have access.

Could we start the discussion to open freemind up to the open source community? By doing so, we can enable a community of developers to help contribute to this project as well as making the project much more accessible to other people. I love the project, and I want to see it thrive.

sourceforge provides the method of pull requests, as well. See
