I'd like to know if FM supports a read-only mode, where no modifications are allowed, and changing node layouts (i.e. temporarily dislocating, opening and collapsing et.al.) doesn't set the MM as modified? I think it's particularly useful when I just want to open and view the MM, with no intention to modify it. This would also avoid that pesky question of "do you want to save" even if I dragged a node for a bit of space.
Thanks

There is no direct support in FreMind for opening mind maps in the mind map mode as read-only. There are two workarounds, though: (a) open the mind map in the browse mode, (b) protect a mind map on the file system level, by setting the indicator "read-only" of the file using file explorer or a text shell.
Hm, OK. Any chance of this appearing as a feature? Say, a tick-menu item which the user can use after the MM is loaded, to make it read-only?
In browse mode, I don't see any mechanism to bring up the file browser so that I can choose an existing MM; drag-and-drop doesn't work in that mode either.

I am a very new FreeMind user. I do not find how to do what Dan said “(a) open the mind map in the browse mode”. I would like do it locally.
Thanks for your help.

HI, Long time user of FreeMind though I cannot say that I have tapped its potential at all! A question, can the developer create a setting where a freemind map can be locked to further editing or change - so it remains the final record of the author and cannot be changed at a later date?

I have created a page for the subject:
