Hmm, this is more than weird. If glutBitmapString produces that error, so should glutBitmapCharacter (there is no difference of importance in the first few lines of these two functions).
Perhaps something went terribly wrong in trying to make freeglut compile and run on OSX? Its not officially supported as we have no one to do the porting and testing work required.
