Yes, it's perfectly possible to use 
https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD_sf_master instead. The github branch 
is synchronized automatically but takes a little time. I have never 
measured how long it takes for the update but it's 10-20 minutes or so.

But you'll only get the master branch this way. If for any reason you 
want to test some branches you have to go back to SF.
