    I just downloaded ForwardTrack 1.1b from http://forwardtrack.eyebeamresearch.org/#download

I cannot find the admin/install directory in the downloaded code (step 6 in the install directions)...

there is no admin or install directory.  it uses mod_rewrite to turn those url paths into commands for the application.

Thanks, I get the basic gist now.  But I'm still having trouble.

I'm working with a local environment at the moment (XAMPP on Windows XP).

If I remove the .htaccess file altogether, I can go to the following address and get something intelligent: http://localhost/projects/myproject/forwardtrack/dispatch.php

But regardless of what I try to use for the mod_rewrite in the .htaccess file, I always get an apache error:

      Server error!

The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in a CGI script.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
      Error 500
      localhost
      11/28/05 13:58:40
      Apache/2.0.55 (Win32) mod_ssl/2.0.55 OpenSSL/0.9.8a PHP/5.0.5 mod_autoindex_color

Any advice on how to correct this issue?  I'm assuming that this is primarily related to the local environment and expect that installation on a server would be smoother.

Still, I would really like to have a local test environment for customizations before installing on a production server.

        1) FT is only going to work with mod_rewrite and .htaccess so don't even bother trying any other way

        2) you can get much more verbose error messages by looking at your apache error log

        3) none of the authors/devlopers user XAMPP so we don't really have a basis to help other than referring you to points #1 and #2.

        thanks,
        mike

Actually, that helped a lot.  Here's the full message in the error log:

[Mon Nov 28 13:50:12 2005] [alert] [client 127.0.0.1] C:/Program Files/xampp/htdocs/projects/myproject/forwardtrack/.htaccess: Invalid command 'RewriteEngine', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

I checked the phpinfo on my local copy and saw that it did not have mod_rewrite.

I found the following link which described my problem exactly (I had to uncomment a line in httpd.conf to turn on mod_rewrite):
          http://www.tutorio.com/tutorial/enable-mod-rewrite-on-apache

I then changed the .htaccess file as follows:
          RewriteBase    /projects/myproject/forwardtrack/

When I went to localhost/projects/myproject/forwardtrack/admin/install, I got an install button.  Upon pressing it, I got a message that forwardtrack was installed, and I also could see in phpMyAdmin that a series of "ft_" tables were created.

However, now when I click on new campaign, I get the following error: "We apologize, there has been some error processing your request."

Checking the apache error log, I noticed the mix of forward and back slashes right away.  That would be my guess first guess as the source of the problem, but I don't which files I would change to correct this.  I was also wondering if there is anything else missing.  If I have to abandon the idea of a local development environment, so be it, but it seems like I'm almost there now.  Any pointers are much appreciated.

Thanks again for your earlier help and especially for getting back to me so quickly.

          The apache error log follows:
[Tue Nov 29 00:23:27 2005] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] [Tue Nov 29 00:23:27 2005] FT Error: ERROR HANDLED: Smarty error: [in admin/form-campaign.tpl line 15]: [plugin] function change FT_DEBUG_LEVEL (in config.inc.php) to some number greater than 0 and you should see more detailed errors printed out in your browser.  probably they will be similar to what u are now seeing in the error logs.

it could be a forward/backslashes problem, but
            http://www.hudzilla.org/phpbook/read.php/19_7_5
            indicates otherwise.

            keep on debuggin'

Thanks for that tip.  I set the debug and got a more readable message.  It can't read campaign/page-index.tpl.  I verified that the file exists at location C:\Program Files\xampp\htdocs\projects\myproject\forwardtrack\style\templates\campaign.    The file is not hidden and is both readable and writable, so I think I can rule out permissions.  The location of the file relative to the calling program would explain the error, except that I would expect everyone to have had this problem.  I'm stuck.  I don't know where to go from here....

I appreciate all the help in trying to get this set up.  I fiddled around with dispatch.php without any success, and eventually gave up trying to set up a local working copy.

However, when I tried to install on the web server, the install code didn't create the tables for some reason.

I wish you all the best with this product.  It looks fantastic and I would have loved to have used it, if I could have gotten it installed...

if you are using apache and linux on your web server, then we can offer much more help in debugging.

for people using linux/apache, we have had many successes installing, never someone who couldn't get it working.  we'd be glad to help, sorry if it was a pain.

Since you're willing to help in debugging, I'll give it another go.  The server is running on Fedora with Apache 2.0.50, MySQL 3.23.58, and PHP 4.3.38. It's a shared hosting environment.

Anyway, here's the problem again: for whatever reason, the database tables are not being created on the install on the server.  With debug off, I just get a generic error.  With debug on, the process dies on an SQL insert into the table.

I get the SQL insert error and array values in the apache error log:

ok, i re-posted ft-1.1b so that it is more error-aware on the table-creation steps.  please get the new distribution from

              http://forwardtrack.eyebeamresearch.org/dist/forwardtrack-1.1b.tar.gz

and see if you get some errors printed out on the table creation process.

ah, I wonder if you don't have InnoDB tables enabled in your MySQL installation.

first, try removing the ';' from all the CREATE TABLE statements in
                  ft/lib/FT/App/Installer.class.php and
                  ft/lib/FT/Core/Installer.class.php

if that doesn't work, try changing 'InnoDB' to 'MYISAM'

                  thanks,
                  mike

                    Randall Emery - 2005-12-01

That was it.  Removing the semicolons worked, but the tables were created as type MyISAM.  I also tried changing InnoDB to type MyISAM and leaving the semicolons in, but that did not work.  Changing InnoDB to MyISAM in combination with removing the semicolons worked.

I tried to see if I could tell if there was InnoDB support or not, but I couldn't find out how.  A search on the web led me to a link saying that InnoDB is only supported from MySQL 3.23.6 and up -- I am using 3.23.58.

Now I'm wondering, though: are there any SQL commands that also need to be adjusted given that it's a different type of table?  When I test out the functionality, the mailing and signup works fine, but the total on the map always stays at '1' and the degrees of separation sliding indicator goes from "start" to "1st" but stops there, even if more people have signed up.  Also, attempting to export the list of people who've signed up gives an error.

Thanks again for all the help.

the only diff bet MYISAM and InnoDB is performance.   dont worry about the SQL.

as for the map data, you will need to re-generate the map data using either the administrative interface or by using the scripts in the ft/maps directory.

                      give it a shot,

The regeneration of the maps worked great, but I looked at the apache error log and found the following when I try to export (using excel in this case):

why not cut/paste that SQL query into phpMyAdmin and debug it?  it works fine for everyone else, its hard  to support such a dated version of MySQL.

                          why not ugrade your MySQL?

OK, I debugged the problem in phpMyAdmin and solved it by adding the optional INNER phrase in front of the first JOIN in the select statement.  Since adding the INNER phrase should have no effect on later versions of MySQL, I was wondering if you could update the code base.  I would be happy to reinstall and test.  In fact, I wouldn’t mind temporarily giving you full access to my site if you wanted a faster response.

If it’s not too much to ask, I was hoping the semicolons in the CREATE TABLE statements might be removed also. I believe this would make the clear up 100% of the incompatibility issues.

By the way, I agree with you that 3.23 is an older version of MySQL, but I think this is a pretty common problem with shared hosting.  My understanding is that this is due to a license incompatibility between commercial control panel software licenses and the MySQL license.  For more info:
                            http://forum.ensim.com/showthread.php?t=15583

Anyway, upgrading really isn’t a practical option for me.  Personally, I could live without the export for my own purposes, and be very happy with the software.  I think it’s great.  But I think it would be such a shame if software this impressive were not available to the local grass roots organizations that can only afford shared hosting.

                            Thanks,
                            Randall

totally.  i will make those changes to the SQL for more backwards compatibility.
