I am working on an idea for a free, open-source alternative to Propellerheads Reason. C++ is preferred but I am open to a different language if there is a better one for creating a music creation program. I want it to be easy to use for experts, fans of oldschool samplers and for those new to the music creation scene.

Here is the project page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/calopsita/

I haven't made any designs yet but I am planning some. I want to make a Reason alternative because there still aren't that many that can really compete with most of the popular commercial programs.

    Features would include:

    • sound synthesis
    • effects
    • samplers
    • drum machines with adjustable instrument settings
    • Sequencer
    • Acid-style beat manipulation
    • Sound recording and editing

The sequencer would be similar to Reason or Cubase, where you just add notes with a MIDI keyboard or mouse-click, and the effects would have their own tracks and be edited with either drawing or benzier-curves.

Most of the samples would be in a separate download to cut down on install file size.

Have you got any experience in working with this sort of application? I don't mean programming it, I mean using it. Do you have any idea how much detail there is in using it? Do you have any idea how much work there is in making one of these?

The way you're writing makes me think you have a good idea but no practical skills to make this thing work. Try joining up with one of the many existing projects trying to do the same thing.
