Self intersecting and Missing Points of Extrema can be fixed just with one click of button. If you generate the font and the errors appear (this can be accessed also Element -> Validation -> Validate), just click the error (the red written text). This will get you to the glyphs. It will write what problems are there and to these two errors a "Fix" button in the middle will appear. Just click it (sometimes it takes more clicks) and errors are fixed. I think I found my answer User Defined Encodings You can also add new encodings to the set that FontForge knows about. There are three menu items that manipulate a set of user defined encodings. As always these specify both a character set and an encoding. The encoding has a maximum of 256 entries, but the character set may be larger (up to 1024). Bizarrely, watching a tutorial on illustrator showed me how to create guides - by dragging down from the horizontal ruler or right from the vertical ruler (this triggered one of those faint 'oh might have seen this before' bell sounds in the back of my brain). Doing so brings up a dialog and one can name the guideline. However the guidelines are not faint, blue or dashed like the ones I see if I open an OTF font. Is it possible to modify the line so that it is at least a different colour?

I believe that I found at least part of the answer. If I start with the .svg file rather than the .ttf I am able to add the new glyphs. When I generate font, I still get the same errors, but the completed fint is viewable.

I am also finding problems with a dual-monitor set up. When opening the Edit window, it is not on the screen at all. I have to right-click on the icon in the Windows Task Bar, 'Maximise' then drag it onto the window in order to resize it.

Can you use the Unicode "zero width non joiner" character to prevent the ligatures from forming?

unfortuntely I have tried this many times to no avail - I really need to actually delete the substitutions.
