There are Players, who participate in the drum circle performance, and Administrators, who manage the drum circle membership, start the server, etc.
Each player needs to register on the web: Go to http://www.music.cs.cmu.edu/drumcircle/register.html. Remember your UserID and Password.
The administrator will need to accept the registration request before the player is able to participate.
The player should download drum circle software.
The player then starts the drum circle program. You have two options: run "stand alone" or "join a network." You can run stand alone any time, but you can only join a network if the server is running.
It's a good idea to test everything in Stand Alone mode. If you click in the big blue-green square at the top and type the "f" key or "j" key, you should hear drum sounds. You can adjust the volume with the My Volume slider and change the reverb with the "My Reverb" slider. If you do not hear drumming, you may need to select an Audio Device (a menu) and restart.
If you choose "join a network" (and the server is running), you will be prompted for a UserID and Password. Next, you should see "Server info completed" telling you that the server is running and that you have the information to connect. Click "OK" and you should be connected.
You can send text to everyone by typing in the "Type HERE" box.
Your drumming is transmitted with a delay to everyone in the drum circle.
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/drumcircle/admin.php is used to administer the database of drumcircle members. You can accept new members and enable/disable existing members.
http://www.music.cs.cmu.edu/drumcircle/start.html is used to start the real-time drumserver. You must keep this page open. When you close the page, the drumserver is terminated. All players connect to the drumserver.
