John, My guess is that this code has never been built with cygwin or gcc on unix. Probably what would be needed is to figure out the intent of the code and find a better / more portable way to do it, and then submit your change to the author who would likely appreciate the help if done in a careful manner. i.e. if you say, "I didn't understand these 300 lines of code over here, couldn't get them to compile, so I just commented them out ...", then your changes might not be warmly accepted.
