Hi all, As part of the recent git+svn repository and commit log mailing list improvements, I would like to announce a brand new mailing list specifically for content developers - the FGAddon commit log mailing list: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/flightgear-fgaddon-commitlogs If you are an aircraft developer with contributions in the official FlightGear aircraft collection, you should consider signing up by following that link! This read only list will allow you to follow every change that happens within the FGAddon repository, as they are committed. The messages will consist of the commit details, the repository log message and the diff of the changes (truncated to a fixed but reasonable size). Using email filters, you can choose to see just the changes that occur to a subset of all aircraft. The new list will increase the transparency and accountability of the repository and allow you respond to and comment on any change. Replies to the messages will be by default directed to the flightgear-devel mailing list (the reply-to header is set), so make sure you are signed up there too before responding ( https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/flightgear-devel ). The core FlightGear code now supports a flexible 2d rendering system which can be used to accurately model glass cockpit displays and other complex instrumentation. There are many new and improved aircraft to explore. A new automated system is now available for scenery submissions that automatically get rolled into the scenery distribution to be enjoyed by everyone. Version 2.8 has improved atmospheric light scatter modeling, better terrain haze, and improved 3d clouds. A very exciting new addition is “Project Rembrandt”. This is still considered “experiemental” and not enabled by default. But when you turn it on you will get real-time shadows, support for multiple light sources (landing lights, instrument lights, directional ground spotlights, even the rotating beacons illuminate the surrounding correctly.) In addition, Project Rembrandt offers a variety of other visual effects such as night vision, film grain effects, depth of field effects, lens (i.e. fisheye) distortion — all in real time. Enjoy!!! Over on the flightgear forums we are organizing a t-shirt give away contest. We are doing this on the forums because we have the ability to create polls and let people vote there. http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6252 The way this works is we took nominations for names of notable recent contributors to the project. We ended up with about 50 names in 5 minutes and then discovered that our poll software has a maximum of 10 options. So what you will see is 10 deserving names, but only 10 of the 100's or 1000's that could be on the list. Fear not! I hope to make this a monthly event, and I hope that everyone keeps in mind that the whole purpose of this is to have fun and not get too bogged down with some of the details that we could get bogged down in. Torsten's wife designed the t-shirt graphics (with some valuable input from Torsten and I.) You can see the design here: http://www.cafepress.com/fgfs To help you see some of the finer points of the design: we have a simple paper airplane that flies in, does a loop, and then is trailing off in a classic phugoid manuever ... (you can just feel the geeky multi-level intelligence oozing from this design!) The flight path is actually source code from the project (we have to distribute the source code right?) :-) All of this is set against the words "TEAM FLIGHTGEAR" in big bold letters. It is SO cool!!! If you want to order something yourself, feel free. I would like to point out that I've set the price on all these items to be the minimum possible that cafe press allows. This means that you are seeing the base price of these items and all that money goes to cafe press to produce and ship the item ... there is no extra markup that comes back to anyone else at the end of the month. My goal is simply to make these items as accessible as I can. There are probably cheaper ways to do t-shirts, but cafe press doesn't require me to print up 100 in advance and ship them myself, and their quality is pretty good; don't expect these to fade out on the first wash; they should last for a good while. So please head over to the FlightGear forums and vote for your favorite developer. It's wide open still ... only two votes separate 1st and last place right now! Go TEAM! Except for the obvious cases listed above the following base data was used: - landcover and line data: VMAP0, as available on http://mapserver.flightgear.org/ - airport data (apt.dat): as included in FlightGear Release 1.0 - elevation data: SRTM v2 3arcsec and 30arcsec data - static objects: current status of the FlightGear Static Scenery Database (http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/) as of 29th of October 2008 As apt.dat is distributed with the base package instead of the scenery itself we were unable to use up-to-date airport data. This scenery release is intended to serve as official scenery for the current FlightGear release and therefore its contents must be synchronized with the contents of the released base package. Airport data proposal --------------------- As an additional feature the release therefore contains airport data in an "Airports"-directory, based on a proposal of the Custom Scenery Project on decoupling airport data from the base package. The Custom-Scenery-Team is convinced that airport data related to the geometry of the scenery has its place in the scenery instead of the base package. Besides the easily updated static objects airports currently are the main scenery feature that is and should be in constant flux due to updates by users. Currently, the release-cycle of the base-package dictates the possible update cycle of airport data in the official scenery. This is a pity and ought to be changed. The proposal targeted a scheme which allows users to only download the airport data required for their desired area, while at the same time allowing easy access to the data with either the airport-ID or a position as key. Currently the apt.dat makes up nearly 5MB compressed, containing lots of data which is actually only needed by genapts, but not by FlightGear itself. With the v850 format of apt.dat - which we will hopefully be able to support in the future - this amount of "superfluous" data will increase. We therefore think that simply distributing apt.dat.gz together with each scenery tile might not be feasible anymore. Each 10x10-degree-tile contains only information about the airports contained in this tile, consisting of at most three XML-files per airport: <ICAO>.twr.xml, <ICAO>.threshold.xml, <ICAO>.parking.xml The <ICAO>.twr.xml-File contains the position(s) of the tower(s) associated with the airport in a PropertyList, presumably to be used for tower view positioning. The <ICAO>.threshold.xml-File contains the threshold positions of runways associated with the airport - two per runway - with heading and displacement information, again in a PropertyList. The <ICAO>.parking.xml-File contains the AI-network for the airport in the well-known format. These files are found in a three-level directory structure (poor man's index). The files for KSFO are for example found in Airports/K/S/F/KSFO.*.xml In addition, the Airports directory contains an index.txt-file with three columns: ID, longitude and latitude of the airport, sorted by longitude and latitude. The position is calculated as the center of gravity of all runways specified for the airport. Hello everybody! The Scenery build version 1.0.0 should be available on the download servers now. It has taken some time, effort, several rebuilds and some hints from Curt to get the world build correct and complete. The scenery is based on the following data sources: - landcover/landmass data provided from http://mapserver.flightgear.org/, identical with VMAP0 data - elevation data: SRTM3 version 2, SRTM30/GTOPO30 version 2 (both from ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/version2) - airport data: apt.dat as released with the V1.0 base package - Most objects and models from the Scenery Objects Database http://fgfsdb.stockill.org/ The main changes relative to the old world scenery are: - points previously classified as "town", but not having much in common with settlements at all, have been removed - airport layouts updated - objects from the Scenery Objects Database updated In addition, the order of taxiways from the airport database is now used as specified in the apt.dat-file - in contrast to being sorted by size as in previous scenery builds. Many taxidraw users have been using the sorting of the taxiways to achieve specific visual effects, which are visible now in the scenery. The KSFO part of the scenery now released also differs slightly from the one in the base package V1.0.0 due to a glitch on my side, which led to missing "ScrubCover" in the San Francisco area during the build of the base package scenery. This glitch also lead to the bay area being plastered with forests, which isn't compatible with reality. The fixed scenery has already been committed to CVS by Martin Spott. We had to apply some more modifications to TerraGear. These are not visible in the scenery, but rather deal with the stability of TerraGear. The changes - in addition to our extensions for new data sources - are available from our git repository at http://mapserver.flightgear.org/git I owe thanks to several people and I list them here in no particular order and without pretending to be complete: - Martin Spott, for organising the infrastructure, taking the burden of data management and of large parts of the release process from my back, and for his constant encouragement. - Norman Vine, who helped us find the high-performance infrastructure and established the links necessary to make use of it. - John Graham of Telascience, who actually provided the hardware and allowed us to use it. A very nice piece of hardware, I have to add! ;-) - Jon Stockill, for adjusting the elevations of the objects in the objects DB, even multiple times on false "ready for release" alerts ;-) - Olaf Flebbe for his support in checking the scenery for notable glitches. - Our scenery testers, most notably Melchior Franz, who provided pretty detailed feedback on his findings. - Last, but definitely not least, Curt Olson for providing valuable hints from his position as a long-time scenery builder and TerraGear developer, and for his encouragement and support. It has taken us longer than expected (we had to repeat the build several times and the main phase of each build took about 29 hours), but we think that we now have sufficient control over the process to get through with it faster next time. You won't be seeing regular monthly rebuilds too soon, but we hope that we can support around 3-4 rebuilds a year for the time being. As our schedules are pretty unpredictable, we cannot guarantee this frequency, but we will do our best to automate the process as far as possible to allow automated build without much intervention from our side. FSWeekend is the largest annual convention in Europe solely dedicated to flight simulation. Following up on last year's successful presence, FlightGear will be returning to the event, showcasing the latest developments. This year we'll bring a large variety of hardware, including a quad-display dual CPU linux based system showcasing the latest possibilities in OpenSceneGraph based display technology. We'll also bring a video projector to present larger-than-life renditions of the FlightGear world. Adding to this mix, we'll be bringing several desktop and laptop computers running the broadest range of supported operating systems. Another first this year is that we'll be running three scheduled demos: 1) A general introduction to the program (Morning session, consisting of a short VfR flight between EHLE and EHAM). 2) Carrier Operations (Early afternoon: seahawk catapult takeoff from the Nimitz, followed by a brief tour of the greater San Francisco area, and concluded with a carrier landing). 3). Multiplayer aerotowing demo (Late afternoon: Running a locally operated multiplayer server, we'll use two computers to launch a glider. Scene is set in the beautiful Swiss Alps). Finally, we'll be showing an early demo of the NL Scenery project, consisting of some beautiful buildings in the greater Amsterdam area. |

Trevor Campbell has just announced that a new version of his FlightGear Flight Planner software has been uploaded to SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/fgflightplanner/ This is a Java/SWT based Gui flight planner that uses the airport and navaid databases from Flightgear, allowing the user to search for airports and navigation aids and plan flights between them. It is now pretty stable and IMHO not too bad for IFR flight planning. I decided this was interesting enough to post on the announce mailing list. In 1997, Michael Basler wrote a German language article on the status and future goals of the FlightGear project. Two weeks ago, Ben Outram did a nice translation of this article to English (for the benefit of us who don't speak fluent German.) It is very interesting to read through this article and see the FlightGear project through our 1997 perspective. We were barely out of the starting gate back then, we were mostly young, naive, and had some really big ideas and no clue how much effort was in store for us. It's interesting to look back and see how we defined the goals for our "little" project, and it's very interesting to see how well we have achieved them. It's also interesting to see that in many areas we have progressed spectacularly further than we would have ever imagined back then. The source code for JSBSim Commander (initial implementation by Matthew Gong) has been placed in CVS. You must have wxWindows installed in order to compile the code. April 28, 2006 - Version 1.2 of the MB339 PAN package has been released (it requires FlightGear 0.9.10). Thanks to Jon S. Berndt for the support in making the MB339 PAN package compatible with the latest version of JSBSim. MB-339 PAN is a free multi-platform simulation of the jet used by the aerobatic team of the Italian Air Force. I am pleased to announce the release of FlightGear v0.9.10. FlightGear is a free, open-source, multi-platform flight simulator. The source code is licensed under the GPL. FlightGear is available for free download from: http://www.flightgear.org Precompiled versions of FlightGear v0.9.10 for most platforms including Windows, Linux, Sgi, Solaris, and Mac OS X are available (or will become available) for download in the next few days. I have just uploaded FlightGear-v0.9.10-pre3 and SimGear-v0.3.10-pre3. This is the 3rd v0.9.10 prerelease. I am still shooting for a final v0.9.10 release sometime next week. The more people that can download the prerelease versions and run them through their paces, the better our final release will be. Compile it on different platforms, try the different aircraft, stress test it as much as possible. We can't always fix every bug or take care of every request in advance of the release, but we will do the best we can. There have been a number of bug fixes and refinements since the previous pre-release. In addition I have included the new terrain textures from Rob Oates which are quite lovely. I would like to do an official and final v0.9.10 release during the first week of April so I would appreciate if as many people as possible can download this version and run it through it's paces. We can't always fix every bug or take care of every request in advance of the release, but we will do the best we can. Take a look at the change log on the web site for the v0.9.10 release. For those that are interested, here is a picture of John and myself in the LFS Technologies 747 simulator at Scale 4x: http://www.flightgear.org/Projects/747-JW/Link/129_2957.html John's 747 simulator attracted a lot of attention at the show and received a lot of good feedback. The visuals and the flight dynamics for this simulator come directly from FlightGear. The glass cockpit displays and all the hardware integration are done through a version of "real-time" linux and Open Glass Cockpit plus a lot of custom coding to model many of the aircraft subsystems (fuel, flight management system, supporting code for the glass cockpit displays, etc.) You can visit LFS Technologies' web site here: http://www.lfstech.com/ They offer a number of products and services for home and professional cockpit builders who would like to move beyond proprietary closed source operating systems and software.
