Dennis, I haven't received your tarball. It's in my notes to see if I get the same test failure results with bison 2.6.4. I'll bump that up to the front of the queue given the pickle you're in. For building flex.pdf, you just need the texinfo package. My memory is vague on how far down the TeX stack that requires you to go. I've generally used tetex as my distribution of choice when I've done it by scratch, but I'm not sure if that is still the state of the art.
