BASE is hidden for robustness. For example 1 BASE ! does some strange stuff.
HEX, BIN, DECIMAL is what I have ever needed in practice.
Elizabeth Conklin mentioned the rationale that decimal is the
normal base that words that change base should return to.
I admit FF does not follow that rule :-) , either.
