On my Pic18-s I think the ESC usually indicates that the turnkey vector is set and execution is being passed to it...

Probably the flash or eeprom is
corrupted.
Maybe you did
not erase the eeprom when you programmed the chip.
Reprogram the FF to the chip,
with your programmer set to erase flash
and eeprom.
