I work a lot with Total Commander (this is no spam ;-).
It has a nice feature when renaming single files.
When renaming a file, in 99% of all cases I usually rename only the prefix, but not the extension.
So in TC it is possible with a single key press to mark only the name of the file, before renaming and not the extension.
In Explorer for example, with F2, the whole "NAME.EXT" is marked, in TC I only mark this way "NAME"

So when I download files from the internet, before clicking on the download link, I am marking in the text the name of the desired program, eg. "FlashFolder 1.9.180 (beta)", click the download link, the file dialog box opens, I hold the shift key, press the left arrow key 4 times (to deselect the extension and the dot) and press Ctrl-V to insert the new name. The extension ".exe" remains usually unchanged, because it makes no sense to change it. Also with JPG, RATR, ZIP etc.
I am often forced to use it, because many downlaodable files have simple names like setup.exe, install.exe and you later never know what they are, only when starting them, the respective installer reveales the real name and purpose.
