The best guess I can offer as to why this happened is because you configured the firewall to block port 6000 (X server). This is what I did, this is how I got the system to lock. I had to go back to console, uninstall firestarter, start X again, reinstall firestarter and change the firewall rule by adding both localhost and my internal IP address to trusted hosts. After that, it worked like a charm. Why it was so fussy about that, I have no idea. I use it at home now :) Hope this helps!
